One of the most frequently asked questions we have regarding the Distance Learning Programme is ‘How many students are enrolled?’ This is a good quesion, considering that most of our students live far from the BISA campus and are seldom able to attend classes. Yet, despite seeming to be ‘invisible’, they are a very real and active part of the BISA community.
We currently have 106 active students (those who have actively pursued studies within the past year).
Of these, 77% live in South Africa, and the rest live elsewhere in Africa and overseas, in countries including Australia, UK, USA, Greece, Lesotho, the Netherlands Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Almost half of our students are not first-language English speakers.
BISA has often been noted for its international ethos, and the fact that students come from many different walks of life. There is perhaps no programme where this is more apparent than the DLP, in which a prison worker living in a country seven time zones away, a teacher in Zambia and a housewife in Natal, can study the same courses with almost equal ease.
We are blessed to be able to contribute to the many ministries in which our students are involved and (through many assignments!) to get to know the dynamic group of individuals who make up our ‘DLPs’.
We are currently exploring the e-learning method of tuition. We hope eventually to be able to offer all of our correspondence courses directly on line.
